The Power of the Vice President under the constittuion is very limited. The vice president has no duites other than to assume the role of president in the event of the president's inablity to perform his/her duties as president. The only other power or duty the vice presdient is to preside as the presdient of the sentate with only the power to have the deciding vote in the event of a tie in the senate.
John Adams was the 1st vice-president and helped shape the traditional role of the vice-presidency. John Adams later went on to become the 2nd presdient of the Untied States. At the time, President Washington could have been a King for life in everything other than name. However, President Washington Stepped down from the presidency in the vain of cincinatis from the Roman replublic era.
In contemporary politics the Vice President has assumed a much more active role in the running of the government in areas that have been traditionally the province of the president.
